A little bit of info about Chris and the business …
Chris came to Oxford in 1976 to train in x-rays and became a radiographer at the Churchill Hospital in 1979.
His growing appreciation of photography and his love of the natural world led him to develop a series of atmospheric photographs of the city and its surrounds … but how to make a living …? He became one of Oxford’s first street salesmen of the recent era, finding various pitches in the city to sell lovely photographs to passing visitors, sometimes aided by his girlfriend, now his wife, by roller-skating around him showing off the goods to the audience!
Business started in earnest in June 1982 with a series of new atmospheric postcards which sold through the shops to a great response. Since that time the range of goods has extended as have areas of operations. The business produces atmospheric and stunning photographic images and makes them into interesting products. It has sold over 20 million cards, more than half a million calendars, over a million books and heaven knows how many fridge magnets!
The products published show Oxford, the Cotswolds, the Channel Islands, Belfast and London. Chris has also been commissioned to photograph in Chile, the Falkland Islands and South Africa and using his publishing knowledge has produced books with other people including David Shepherd, the wildlife artist, the RAF and Dame Mary Peters, as well as a book of South African botanical illustrations by Lady Cynthia Tait.
There are three people full time in the business, Chris and his wife Ginger, who in addition to constant encouragement develops some design and the relationship with busy retailers, plus the redoubtable Annabel who started as a secretary in 1989 and now is the vital office organiser, business administrator and general lynchpin.
Away from work, Chris enjoys fishing and wine, sometimes together, and walking his dogs.
